One of the leaders in the industry in sustainability efforts is the Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi Resort & Spa, who this year (2019) was recognized by the Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association for going above and beyond to implement sustainable practices in everyday operations, along with the other Hyatt Resorts across the state of Hawaiʻi (Hyatt Regency Maui, Waikiki and Andaz Wailea)
According to a 2016 press release “In early 2015 Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa invested over $300,000 to convert one of its tennis courts into a hydroponic garden to grow lettuce for the resort’s restaurants and events. The 4,000 sq. ft. former tennis court, now farm, produced its first crop in January 2015 and is now consistently producing over 300 pounds per week of the seven types of lettuces grown. The Grand Hyatt Kauai Garden pays homage to the resort owner’s vision of turning dreams into reality for a sustainable future.”

Here are some other ways they are going above and beyond in their commitment to sustainability on Kauai:
REDUCE

Reusable water bottles in guest rooms with filtered water stations throughout resort reduce individual use water bottles by 50,000 per month; 600,000 per year.

Allowing guests to choose whether to have linens refreshed daily saves 500,000 gallons of water per year.
REUSE

Waste cooking oil is collected and processed into bio-diesel fuel.

All usable items such as mattresses, art, furniture, dishes, etc. are sold in fundraisers for local charities.
RECYCLE

Recycle bins are available in guest rooms as well as throughout the resort for guests to deposit glass, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans.

Take-out packaging is made from biodegradable materials.
